Trauma Family Forever

In memory of significant contributors to the care of Trauma patients.

Sandy Zalstein (1969-2022)

Dr Sandy Zalstein was the inaugural Statewide Director of Trauma for Tasmania. In the period 2016 – 2019 he championed development of the nascent trauma system, enacting care pathways to ensure that injured Tasmanians receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time. Sandy drew on his experiences as an anaesthetist and intensivist at The Alfred and in the Australian Defence Force, as well as the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trauma Verification process, to map a path towards best practice trauma care in his adopted state. This foundation has allowed his successors to implement a trauma registry, comprehensive case management and a specialist trauma inpatient unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Sandy was a larger than life figure whose life and work continues to influence all those who were fortunate enough to work with him.
